This annual event brings together students, parents, and the wider community to celebrate the diverse cultures that make up our school and the world beyond. Through food, performances, and interactive activities, this festival serves as a platform for people to experience the beauty of international traditions. It also aligns with SES's Cambridge Curriculum, which emphasises global perspectives, cultural literacy, and experiential learning. Here are the highlights of the event:
SES International Parade
The festival will commence with a grand SES International Parade, where students of over 20 nationalities will proudly showcase their traditional attire, flags, and symbolic artefacts representing their respective countries. This colourful procession will be a visual celebration of diversity, unity, and the rich heritage of different cultures coming together in one vibrant event.
Authentic Homemade Dishes from 20 Countries
For food lovers, this festival offers the chance to savour authentic homemade dishes from 20 different countries. From Asian delicacies to European specialities and Latin American flavours, each dish is prepared directly by diaspora communities eager to share their culinary heritage. This year, the festival proudly features cuisines from Australian, Chinese, French, Indian, Indonesian, Iranian, Irish, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Dutch, Pakistani, Romanian, Russian, Singaporean, South African, Thai, British, American, and Zimbabwean traditions.
Cultural Performances
Featuring traditional dances, ethnic music, and other artistic performances, this festival becomes a stage for cultures from around the world. Students, parents, and invited guests will showcase stunning traditional costumes, mesmerising musical instruments, and dramatic performances that tell the stories and history of various communities. Special performances include Kendo martial arts demonstrations, a cup stacking showcase, a solo performance by student Nicole, and a vocal group performance by Bung Kerrie.
Traditional Games
Discover the joy of traditional games from different countries, such as congklak from Indonesia, petanque from France, or yutnori, ddakji, and jegichagi from Korea. These activities are not only entertaining but also offer insights into how people in different parts of the world have enjoyed leisure time throughout history.
Kids' Activities
For families with children, a variety of educational and interactive activities are available, including colouring traditional textile patterns, workshops on crafting cultural artefacts, face painting, human claw, lampion drawing, a balloon palace, and a LEGO competition by Bricks 4 Kidz. These hands-on experiences support the Cambridge Curriculum’s focus on creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, allowing children to engage with cultural concepts in an immersive way.
Preloved Charity Corner
In the spirit of giving, the festival also hosts the Preloved Charity Corner, which was inspired by the charitable efforts of SES students' parents, a second-hand bazaar where proceeds will be donated to charity. This year, all funds and donated children’s clothing, books, and toys will be sent to underprivileged children in Papua, helping provide essential items and educational resources. Visitors can find affordable clothing, accessories, and unique items while making a meaningful impact on the lives of children in need.
TikTok Competition
Adding a modern touch, the festival also holds a TikTok competition for content creators. Attendees are encouraged to create creative videos showcasing cultural themes, whether it’s dance, food reviews, or traditional games. Exciting prizes await those with the most innovative and inspiring content!
Sustainability Collaboration with Garda Pangan
In an effort to promote sustainability, Surabaya European School collaborates with Garda Pangan to manage food waste responsibly. This initiative aims to raise awareness among students and attendees about food sustainability, ensuring that excess food is redistributed to those in need while reducing environmental impact.
